The diagram below pictures the project structure broken down into 9 work packages.

WP1: To propose a toolbox architecture and use cases for its validation (led by RTE)
The architecture favours flexibility and openness in order to enable the integration of any relevant tool for security assessment. The validation is based on use cases of progressive complexity.

WP2: To collect, manage and transform the data required by the toolbox operation (led by PEPITE)

The toolbox relies heavily on the availability of detailed and accurate grid description and states, definitions and levels of uncertainties, probabilities of contingencies and description of corrective and preventive actions.

WP3: To validate dynamic models of components of the pan-European system, using off-line analysis (led by KTH)

Dynamic models are needed to describe the dynamic behaviour of the grid: they are generally complex and their validation requires a high level of expertise. Tools need to be developed to support engineers in order to determine model parameters from measured dynamic responses of the grid.

WP4: To develop tools for the off-line definition of screening rules to assess the security at pan-European level (led by Imperial College)

The challenge is to define the best operating rules (i.e. screening rules) to prevent dangerous situation by resorting to off-line dynamic and probabilistic tools while accounting for all kind of phenomena (voltage stability, inter-area oscillations, transient stability, etc.).

WP5: To develop tools for in-line security assessment (led by RSE)

The challenge is to switch from the deterministic “N-1” approach (based on static simulations) to operational (in-line) risk-based assessments taking into account uncertainties, dynamic phenomena and corrective actions at different time scales (from two-day ahead to real time).

WP6: To review and assess the potential for more robust defence and restoration plan (led by DTU)

More robust defence plans and optimal restoration are designed with the help of automatic tools (integration of renewables and distribution energy resources, use of time-synchronized measurements from PMUs).

WP7: To validate the overall integrated toolbox performances (led by INESC)

Use cases defined in WP1 are used to validate the developed tools in a step by step process (i.e. increasing complexity).

WP8: To disseminate the project findings (led by TECHNOFI)

The project results are disseminated to regulatory bodies, the TSO European community and other stakeholders in view of progressive knowledge sharing and adoption of the toolbox. This work package also prepares the industrialisation phase of the toolbox beyond the project’s end.

WP9: coordination and management (led by RTE)

This work package deals with the project management and interaction with the European Commission.
